Faruque Ahmed Hospitalised After Cardiac Arrest in Dhaka
Former Bangladesh cricket captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) vice-president Faruque Ahmed has been hospitalised in Dhaka after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday. The 58-year-old experienced severe chest pain around noon before being rushed to a local hospital, where doctors conducted an emergency angiogram and discovered a blockage in one of his arteries.
Emergency Treatment and Current Condition
According to BCB officials, doctors successfully inserted a stent (ring) in the affected artery later in the evening. Faruque is currently under observation in the hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and is reported to be in stable condition.
A BCB spokesperson informed Daily Sun:
“He was feeling unwell since last night. This afternoon, he was taken to the hospital. After an angiogram, a blockage was found in his heart, and doctors inserted a ring in the evening. Now he is in the CCU.”
The cricketing community across Bangladesh has extended its prayers and support for the former captain’s speedy recovery.
A Veteran of Bangladesh Cricket
Faruque Ahmed’s contribution to Bangladesh cricket stretches across both his playing and administrative careers. He represented Bangladesh between 1984 and 1999, featuring in seven ODIs and numerous domestic and international fixtures during the country’s early cricketing days.
As a player, Faruque was known for his calm leadership and technical batting skills. He also captained the national side during the transitional phase before Bangladesh achieved Test status in 2000.
Role in Bangladesh Cricket Administration
After retirement, Faruque continued to serve Bangladeshi cricket off the field. He twice held the position of national selector, playing a vital role in team-building during crucial periods of the country’s cricketing growth.
In August 2024, following the resignation of then BCB president Nazmul Hassan, Faruque stepped in as the interim BCB president, serving for nine months. His leadership ensured administrative continuity before Aminul Islam Bulbul took over as the new president in mid-2025.
Faruque was later elected as a BCB vice-president in October 2024, representing the club category, and has since been actively involved in cricket operations and development initiatives.
Cricket Community Sends Wishes
Several former players, board members, and fans have shared their concern and well-wishes for Faruque’s recovery. The BCB medical team and his family are monitoring his condition closely, with further updates expected in the coming days.
Faruque Ahmed’s legacy as both a cricketer and administrator continues to inspire many within Bangladesh cricket, and the nation now hopes for his swift and full recovery.
