Failure To Win An ICC Trophy Could Have Cost Kohli The ODI Captaincy: Karim

Before India’s journey to South Africa, Rohit Sharma stepped in as captain of the Indian team in one-day internationals (ODIs). Kohli confirmed his choice to quit as the captain of the ‘Men in Blue’ in T20I cricket previously this year.

According to the former Indian cricketer Saba Karim, Virat Kohli has been stepped down as ODI captain. Karim went on to say that Kohli himself said that he would step down as captain for Team India from T20Is, but would continue to lead the side in ODIs. Karim also believes that Kohli’s failure to lift an ICC Trophy was a key consideration in his removal as ODI captain.

Dravid often put emphasis on having clear communication with players and kohli : Saba Karim

It is right to say that Kohli has been sacked. He made the announcement while leaving the T20I captaincy and could have confirmed that he does not want to continue as ODI captain as well. This meant he wanted to remain ODI captain. Not being able to win an ICC trophy could have cost Virat the ODI captaincy,” said Saba Karim.

Saba Karim further believes that Indian head coach Rahul Dravid or any authority from the BCCI would have discussed splitting leadership with Kohli. Karim finished by saying that Dravid is a person who values effective discussion with his teammates.

I am confident that Rahul Dravid or someone from the BCCI would have had a word with Virat Kohli regarding their plans of introducing split captaincy. Dravid has often put emphasis on having clear communication with players. So, when it comes to taking such a big decision, I believe someone would have surely talked to Kohli,” concluded Karim.
