England Looking to Seize Command on Day 3 as Sri Lanka Continues to Struggle

ENG vs SL 2nd Test Match Updates for Sri Lanka tour of England, 2024

ENG vs SL 2nd Test Match Updates: England has taken a firm grip on the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka after a dominant display with the ball on the second day. The visitors were bundled out for a mere 196, and England’s bowlers, led by Matthew Potts and Chris Woakes, were instrumental in extracting significant movement from the pitch. With a commanding lead of 231, England is now in complete control as they look to bat Sri Lanka out of the game.

Sri Lanka’s batting performance was disappointing, with several wickets falling due to poor shot selection rather than exceptional deliveries. The openers fell playing away from their bodies, while Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal were dismissed in a soft manner, getting caught down the leg side. The Sri Lankan batsmen struggled to cope with the sustained pressure from England’s bowlers, leading to their downfall.

England’s Bowling Charge Crumbles Sri Lankan Batting Lineup

England’s bowling unit was relentless on Day 2, as all four seamers chipped in with crucial wickets. Matthew Potts and Chris Woakes were the standout performers, consistently troubling the Sri Lankan batters with their accurate line and length.

Potts, in particular, was impressive, generating swing and seam movement that kept the opposition on their toes. Woakes, on the other hand, used his experience to extract extra bounce and movement, making life difficult for the Sri Lankan batsmen. Shoaib Bashir, given his opportunity, didn’t disappoint either, adding to Sri Lanka’s woes with his disciplined bowling.

The young bowler showcased his potential by picking up two crucial wickets, further tightening England’s grip on the game. However, amid the Sri Lankan batting collapse, Kamindu Mendis stood tall with a classy 76. Mendis was the only Sri Lankan batsman who looked comfortable against England’s pace attack, playing with composure and skill. Despite his efforts, the lack of support from the other end meant that Sri Lanka could not put up a competitive total.

Gus Atkinson’s Maiden Test Hundred as Sri Lanka’s Batting Woes Continue

The day also saw a remarkable achievement from England’s Gus Atkinson, who scored his maiden Test century. Coming in at number eight, Atkinson played with proper command, reaching the milestone in just 103 balls. His innings not only added valuable runs to England’s total but also highlighted his all-round capabilities. Atkinson has now joined an elite club of cricketers who have scored a century and taken ten wickets in a match at Lord’s.

Interesting Day 3 to Watch Out For

As England heads into Day 3 with a lead of 256 and nine wickets in hand, they are poised to bat Sri Lanka out of the game. The pitch at Lord’s is slow, but the conditions are overcast, which could provide some assistance to the bowlers. Sri Lanka faces an uphill battle to avoid an innings defeat, and they’ll need a monumental effort to turn the tide in their favor.
