Harry Brook Rescues England As New Zealand’s Early Advantage Fades On Day 2 Of 1st Test

ENG vs NZ 1st Test Day 2 Match Updates 2024

On day two of the 1st test between New Zealand and England in Christchurch, New Zealand’s debutant Nathan Smith had an unfortunate inning, despite creating several wicket-taking opportunities. The hosts failed the debutant by dropping six airborne catches, including some relatively straightforward catches. Here’s a look at ENG vs NZ 1st Test Day 2 Match Updates 2024.

Smith finished the innings with figures of 2/86, but his efforts went unrewarded due to the fielding failure. The sloppy display at Hagley Oval on November 29 left New Zealand disappointed.

Kane’s comeback On Day 1: England vs New Zealand 1st Test 2024

On the first day of the 1st Test, New Zealand reached 319/8, setting up a solid target. Kane Williamson, who returned after missing the series against India, had a commanding stint of 93, just seven runs short of a century, which indeed helped in anchoring New Zealand innings. Tom Latham contributed 47, while Rachin Ravindra scored 34. Glenn Phillips, with a calm 41*, ensured New Zealand stayed on track.

English bowler Shoaib Bashir impressed with 4 wickets and had a chance to claim his fifth in his Test career. Gus Atkinson dismissed key players, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson, while Brydon Carse dismissed Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell. Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes, despite long spells of strong bowling, failed to take wickets. Stokes bowled 13 overs without a breakthrough, eventually ending the day with New Zealand in a strong position, but England’s bowlers still had some work to do.

The English Storm Harry Brook

On the second day of the 1st test, New Zealand were bowled out for 348 after adding 29 runs to their total target. Brydon Carse was the standout bowler for England, taking 4/64, including two wickets on the second morning. Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 58. England struggled early in their innings, losing Zak Crawley for a duck and debutant Jacob Bethell for just 10.

Joe Root was also dismissed for a cheap 0, leaving England at 45/3. Ben Duckett played aggressively but was dismissed before lunch for 46 runs, leaving England at 71/4. Harry Brook then played a spectacular innings, reaching an unbeaten 132*, while Ollie Pope contributed 77. The pair added 145 runs for the fifth wicket. England ended the day at 319/5, just 29 runs behind New Zealand. Brook was dropped four times, but his partnership with Pope turned the advantage in England’s favor.
