Brevis becomes the youngest South African to smash a Century

Dewald Brevis maiden T20I century against Australia

On August 12, 2025, South African prodigy Dewald Brevis etched his name in cricket history with a blistering maiden T20I century against Australia at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin. His explosive 125* off 56 balls powered South Africa to 218/7, showcasing his immense talent. Let’s take a look at Dewald Brevis smashes his first century against Australia.

Youngest South African to Score a T20I Century

At 22 years and 105 days, Dewald Brevis became the youngest South African to score a T20I century, surpassing Richard Levi’s record (24 years, 36 days) set against New Zealand in 2012. Brevis achieved this feat in the 2nd T20I against Australia on August 12, 2025, in Darwin.

His 41-ball hundred, laced with 12 fours and eight sixes, came after South Africa slumped to 57/3. Brevis’ aggressive strokeplay, including a 126-run stand with Tristan Stubbs, turned the game. His record-breaking knock, praised by AB de Villiers, highlighted his potential as a global cricket star.

Highest Individual Score for South Africa in T20Is

Brevis’ unbeaten 125 against Australia in 2025 set a new record for the highest individual score by a South African in T20Is, eclipsing Faf du Plessis’ 119 against West Indies in 2015. Batting at No. 4, Brevis smashed 12 fours and eight sixes, scoring at a strike rate of 223.21.

His innings rescued South Africa from 57/3, propelling them to 218/7. This performance outdid previous South African benchmarks like Richard Levi’s 117* (2012) and Reeza Hendricks’ 117 (2024), cementing Brevis’ reputation as a destructive force in T20 cricket.

His 41-ball century, the fastest against Australia, broke Martin Guptill’s 49-ball record from 2018. Brevis’ knock, featuring 20 boundaries (12 fours, eight sixes), outshone scores like Brendon McCullum’s 116* (2010) and Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 104* (2011).

His assault on bowlers like Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood powered South Africa’s highest T20I total against Australia (218/7), marking a historic performance. After having lost the first T20I against Australia in the 3-match T20I series, this century has been a solid pillar for the Proteas side to rise against the mighty Australia.
