Karnataka Approves Cricket Matches at Chinnaswamy With Safety Riders
The Karnataka government has given the green light for the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to host international and IPL cricket matches, but only after the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) ensures full compliance with safety and security regulations. So let’s know about Chinnaswamy Stadium cricket safety compliance.
Safety Compliance Mandatory Following June Stampede
The clearance comes after the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission investigated the tragic stampede on June 4, 2025, during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives.
The commission had flagged the stadium’s design and structure as unsafe for large gatherings and recommended several measures, including:
-
Adequate gates for smooth entry and exit
-
Purpose-built queuing and circulation zones separate from public roads
-
Emergency evacuation plans meeting international safety standards
-
Sufficient parking for spectators
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar confirmed that the government intends to allow matches but emphasized that KSCA must implement all the recommendations before hosting major events.
KSCA Leadership Meets Government Officials
Recently, the newly elected KSCA president B.K. Venkatesh Prasad, along with other office-bearers, met with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to discuss hosting future matches at the stadium.
A senior minister clarified, “The onus is now on the association to comply with the guidelines. We have not set any deadline. It is up to them.”
Impact on IPL and Other Big-Ticket Matches
The government’s decision raises questions about whether IPL matches in Bengaluru will go ahead as planned next season. While sporting events will be permitted, compliance with the commission’s safety protocols is mandatory before allowing large crowds.
Chinnaswamy Stadium, home ground for the reigning champions RCB, played a central role in the 2025 IPL victory celebrations.
Additional Cabinet Decisions
Alongside cricket-related matters, the Karnataka Cabinet also approved:
-
A Bill for internal reservation among Scheduled Castes, allocating 17% SC quota into 6%, 6%, and 5% divisions across different subgroups
-
A cess of Rs 1,000 on new vehicles, via an amendment to the Karnataka Road Safety Authority Act
Looking Ahead
While the Chinnaswamy Stadium remains central to Karnataka’s cricketing calendar, the KSCA now faces the critical task of implementing robust safety measures to prevent any recurrence of past tragedies and ensure smooth conduct of future matches.
