Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Chetan Chauhan, one of the most well-known openers of Indian cricket, died from complications linked to COVID-19 on Sunday after nearly 36 hours of life support.

Chetan Chauhan was 73 and is survived by his wife and son Vinayak, who played 40 Tests for India. He currently served in Uttar Pradesh cabinet as the Minister of Sainik Welfare, Home Guards, and Civil Defence.

“After fighting a successful war, my elder brother Shri Chetan Chauhan has left us today. I sincerely thank everyone who prayed for his recovery. His son Vinayak will meet us at any time and we will then perform the last rites,” his younger brother Pushpendra Chauhan told news agency.

Chetan Chauhan, who was the longest serving opening partner of legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, was admitted to Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi PGI hospital on July 12 after checking for coronavirus positive.
His health deteriorated due to kidney-related problems, and he was admitted to Gurgaon’s Medanta hospital. On Friday night, he had a multi-organ failure and was put on ventilator support.

After retiring, Chetan Chauhan served in various capacities at the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) — president , vice president, secretary, and chief selector — apart from being the Indian Team’s manager during his Australia tour in 2001.

In 1991 and 1998 he was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh and in 1981 he was awarded the Arjuna Award.
