Captains are the most important pillars of any team; a competent captain can transform a team into a formidable force by providing their side with good direction, confidence and a never-say-die mentality that allows them to win anywhere in the world, regardless of their opponent. Let’s look at Captains with most ICC Trophies.

Many captains throughout cricket history have led the side by example and built a solid team capable of winning major ICC events. So, without further ado, let’s look at captains with most ICC titles.

Pat Cummins: 2 (WTC 2023, CWC 2023) 

The only active international player on the list, Pat Cummins, is the only bowler in the list who has won ICC titles multiple times as captain.  

Cummins became the captain of team Australia’s test side when the board was in search for a good leader after Tim Paine’s resignation in 2021. He was named ODI captain too the following year. 

Australia under the leadership of skilled pacer Pat Cummins secured a spot in the WTC 2023 Finals and managed to defeat Rohit Sharma’s India. In not more than six months from WTC, Cummins & Co then won the ODI World Cup 2023.

Daren Sammy: 2 (T20 WC 2012, 2016) 

Sammy’s West Indies was a team to beat in the shortest format of the game, especially in ICC events. The West Indies great Daren Sammy led the Caribbean team to two ICC titles, both T20 World Cup.  

West Indies under Daren Sammy managed to break their ICC World Cup drought after 33-long years by winning the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 and won it for the second time in 2016.

Clive Lloyd: 2 (CWC 1975, 1979) 

Clive Lloyd, one of the most stylish batters of his era, became the first-ever captain to win an ICC Cricket World Cup trophy way back in 1975 when his side defeated Australia at Lord’s.  

Lloyd-led West Indies once again reached the finals of Cricket World Cup in 1979 edition and overcome the hosts England to claim their second World Cup title.

MS Dhoni: 3 (T20 WC 2007, CWC 2011, CT 2013) 

The legendary MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the history of cricket and is also holding a unique record of winning all major ICC trophies.  

Dhoni, with no prior experience of leading the international side won T20 World Cup 2007 as captain during his first assignment. MS was invincible after that, as he led a team that defeated the powerful Australia in Australia. Claimed number 1 position in test cricket.  

India won 2011 cricket world cup after 28-long years in MS Dhoni’s captaincy and secured Champions Trophy in 2013.

Ricky Ponting: 4 (CWC 2003, 2007, CT 2006, 2009) 

This gentleman needs no introduction when it comes to the list of successful captains. The Aussie great is clearly ranks number 1 on the list, having led Australia to four ICC titles.  

Ponting became the captain of Australia in 2002 and won the CWC the following year. He successfully defended the World Cup title in 2007 and led Australia to victory in ICC Champions Trophy twice.
