BCCI unhappy with Gautam Gambhir after post-match remarks
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under scrutiny following the team’s 30-run defeat to South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens. According to multiple reports, the BCCI is displeased with Gambhir’s comments about the Kolkata pitch after the loss. While the board is not taking any immediate disciplinary action, his tenure is now being monitored closely, with the 2026 T20 World Cup at home emerging as a decisive moment for his coaching future. So let’s have a look at BCCI unhappy with Gautam Gambhir.
Pressure Mounts After Another Home Series Defeat
The defeat in Kolkata added to India’s struggles, marking their third consecutive Test series loss at home. The Eden Gardens wicket—prepared with black soil—became the centre of debate as India collapsed to 93 in the fourth innings. Surprisingly, instead of criticising the pitch, Gambhir praised it and stated that it was the kind of surface the team had requested.
His stance, however, has reportedly not gone down well with the BCCI, especially amid growing concerns over India’s declining red-ball consistency.
BCCI Displeased with Gambhir’s Public Defence of the Pitch
As per an NDTV report, Gambhir’s press-conference remarks were viewed as ill-timed and avoidable. With the team already under criticism for technical deficiencies against spin and bounce, officials felt the coach’s strong defence of the pitch diverted focus from the team’s shortcomings.
“The BCCI is not exactly pleased with India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s forthright comments on the Kolkata pitch following the recent Test defeat, even though no immediate action is being taken. Sources indicate that Gambhir is likely to remain in charge for now due to a lack of alternatives, but his position could be reviewed later this year, especially if India underperforms in the 2026 T20 World Cup at home,” the report stated.
Performance Review Scheduled with Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar
Despite the concerns, sources confirm that Gambhir will continue as head coach for the time being. However, his role is not entirely secure. The BCCI is expected to conduct a formal performance review meeting with Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the completion of the South Africa white-ball series.
The board wants clarity on the team’s direction, adaptability, and consistency—areas that have come under scrutiny following recent Test setbacks.
2026 T20 World Cup: The Defining Test for Gambhir
The board has made it clear that Gambhir’s future will heavily depend on India’s performance at the 2026 T20 World Cup, which the country will host. Despite the recent Test struggles, Gambhir continues to enjoy confidence for his achievements in white-ball cricket, including guiding India to Champions Trophy and Asia Cup titles.
