BCB Rules Out Rebel League Amid Dhaka Cricket Turmoil

BCB Rejects Rebel League Speculation

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has firmly dismissed speculation surrounding the formation of a rebel cricket league, amid growing unrest involving several Dhaka-based clubs. The situation escalated after 44 clubs raised objections to the legitimacy of the current board, alleging irregularities in its election process. Despite the unrest, BCB officials have reiterated that cricket in Bangladesh must operate strictly under the board’s governance.

Dhaka First Division League Disruption Explained

The controversy has already affected domestic cricket. The Dhaka First Division Cricket League (DFDCL) 2025–26 faced disruption after eight clubs failed to turn up for scheduled fixtures, resulting in multiple walkovers. Due to these developments, the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) postponed the second phase of the league to reassess participation and structure.

As per existing competition regulations, teams that fail to participate in scheduled matches are considered non-participating and face automatic relegation. Consequently, the eight absentee clubs have been demoted to the Dhaka Second Division for the next season, eliminating the need for a relegation playoff this year.

BCB’s Stand: One Governing Authority

BCB officials have strongly emphasized that cricket cannot function without a recognized governing body. Vice-president Faruque Ahmed highlighted that allowing independently run leagues would undermine the very foundation of organized cricket. He stressed that both national boards and the ICC exist to ensure regulation, fairness, and global coordination.

Echoing similar sentiments, CCDM chairman Adnan Rahman Dipon questioned the legitimacy of any tournament conducted outside the BCB framework. He noted that while informal matches can be arranged privately, official leagues require board and international approval to be considered valid.

Why a Rebel League Is Unlikely

All registered players and clubs in Bangladesh fall under BCB jurisdiction. Any competition organized outside this system would lack recognition, official status, and access to international pathways. Without ICC approval, such a league would remain unofficial and isolated, limiting player opportunities and credibility.

What Lies Ahead for Domestic Cricket

The BCB has signaled openness to dialogue but remains firm on governance principles. The coming days will be crucial as authorities meet with participating clubs to stabilize the domestic calendar and prevent further disruptions.
