Bangladesh Women Clinch Record 154-Run Victory Over Ireland in 1st ODI

The Bangladesh women’s cricket team had their largest victory margin in One-Day Internationals, defeating the Ireland women’s team by 154 runs in the first match of their three-game series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Bangladesh posted a spectacular total of 252/4, and their bowlers supported the strong batting with their amazing performance with clinical performance, dismissing Ireland for a total of 98 runs in 28.5 overs. Tigresses Batting Prowess  

Bangladesh had won the toss and chose to showcase their batting abilities, the overall score was led by Sharmin Akhter’s excellent career-high 96 off 89 balls. Sharmin, who had returned from an international break in July 2023, hit about 14 boundaries but just fell short of her first century. She was dismissed in the second-to-last over, caught at mid-off by Freya Sargent while attempting to reach her maiden century.  

Sharmin received strong support from opener Fargana Hoque, who made a good 61 off 110 balls. Fargana and Murshida Khatun (38 off 61), built a solid 59-run opening partnership, setting the stage for Bangladesh’s record total. Freya Sargent was the standout bowler for the Irish side, taking 2-51, while Laura Delany and Aimee Maguire claimed one wicket each.  

Bowlers Wreak Havoc 

Bangladeshi speedster Marufa Akter made an early impact in Ireland’s chase, dismissing captain Gaby Lewis (5) and Amy Hunter (0) in consecutive balls in the third over. Apart from missing a hat trick, her efforts were successful in keeping the Irish side unsettled.  

Sultana Khatun and Nahida Akter claimed three wickets each, while Marufa dismissed two, leaving Ireland’s batters struggling. Only Sarah Forbes (25) and Laura Delany (22) resisted before Ireland fell well short of wickets.  

This victory surpasses Bangladesh’s previous biggest win by runs, a 119-run achievement over the South African women’s team. Leading 1-0 in the series against Ireland, Bangladesh aims to seal the deal in the second match on 30 November.
