While both legends have not officially announced their retirement from ODIs, mounting speculation suggests that the 50-over format may soon see the exit of India’s most iconic modern duo.
Their next international assignment is scheduled for August 2025, a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh, followed by a tour to Australia in October.
With Cricket Australia reportedly planning a farewell ceremony for the pair during their visit, many believe that this may be the last time the two giants of Indian cricket will tour Down Under.
“This might be the last time that we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case, who knows, it might not be, but if it is, we wanna make sure we give them a great send-off and a reflection of the incredible contribution they’ve made to international cricket,” said Todd Greenberg, CEO Cricket Australia.
The 2027 World Cup: One Last Dance?
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, is being viewed by many as the potential swansong for both players. Kohli will be 38 and Rohit 40 by then, which makes their longevity in a physically demanding format a major question mark.

Kohli remains one of the most prolific ODI batters in history. With over 14,000 runs, an average in the 50s, and unmatched consistency in chases, his legacy is firmly intact. Even with the diminishing frequency of centuries, he continues to be a big match player.
Despite age catching up, both continue to maintain elite fitness levels and deliver consistent performances, which makes it difficult to rule them out. However, selectors and management may opt for transition planning with an eye on the future.
