Karnataka Clears Anekal Cricket Stadium as Chinnaswamy’s Future Remains Uncertain

Anekal cricket stadium: Karnataka Government Approves New Stadium

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the construction of a world-class cricket stadium and sports complex in Anekal, on the southern outskirts of Bengaluru. The project, estimated at ₹2,350 crore, will be spread across 75 acres at Suryanagar Fourth Stage Extension, Indlavadi village. The cabinet has directed the Housing Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and conduct a viability study before implementation.

Features of the Anekal Stadium

Once completed, the new stadium will have a seating capacity of 80,000, making it one of the largest in India. Beyond cricket, the sports complex will include facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports and a 3,000-seat auditorium. This stadium will become Karnataka’s third international cricket venue, following approved projects in Mysuru and Tumakuru.

Why a New Stadium Was Needed

Bengaluru’s current international stadium, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, has a capacity of only 38,000 and has struggled with space and infrastructure issues. International cricket hasn’t been played there since June 2004, following a tragic stampede after an RCB IPL victory, which claimed 11 lives. The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission recommended shifting major cricket events to safer venues, a move Karnataka appears ready to act on after nearly two decades.

Implications for RCB and T20 World Cup

With the Anekal stadium on the horizon, RCB may no longer play at M. Chinnaswamy, leaving Bengaluru fans without live IPL or WPL action. The new venue could also affect the 2026 T20 World Cup, as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) may not host matches if the Chinnaswamy Stadium remains unsuitable. Previously, KSCA shifted the Maharaja Trophy T20 to Mysore and missed hosting 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup matches.

Project Approval and Next Steps

The Karnataka Housing Board has given in-principle approval for the project. The next step involves presenting the Detailed Project Report before the cabinet for final approval. Once cleared, construction will begin, and the stadium is expected to bring modern infrastructure, enhanced crowd management, and facilities meeting international standards to Bengaluru.

Conclusion

The Anekal stadium promises to be a landmark project for Karnataka cricket. With its massive capacity and modern facilities, it could become RCB’s new home ground, while also positioning Bengaluru as a city capable of hosting major international cricket tournaments safely and efficiently. Fans can look forward to a state-of-the-art venue that surpasses the limitations of Chinnaswamy Stadium and offers a world-class cricketing experience.
