Afghanistan Sign Andy Flower As Consultant For The 2021 T20-WC

Former Zimbabwe captain, Andy Flower has been designated as Afghanistan’s consultant for the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. On Friday, October 9, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced their decision.

For a long time, the 53-year-old has worked in administrative positions. From 2009 to 2014, he was the England national squad’s head coach.

Later in 2010, the lefty also inspired the Three Lions in capturing the World T20 title. Andy Flower has already entered the Afghanistan national cricket team’s bio-secure bubble.

Flower has been warmly greeted by the ACB’s chairman, Azizullah Fazli. The CEO stated that working with a lot of Afghan players in domestic events will benefit Flower and the national squad.

“We are delighted that Andy has joined ACB. Andy has worked with a number of our players in various franchise completions and his vast experience will be very beneficial and useful to help the team in the World Cup,” Fazli was quoted as saying in a statement.

Aside from managing the England national team, Flower has also coached in T20 competitions such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Pakistan Super League(PSL), the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and the first edition of The Hundred.

Flower is still regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most outstanding cricketers. He amassed 4794 and 6786 runs in 63 Tests and 213 ODIs, correspondingly, with 16 hundreds and 82 fifties. In his international career, he reportedly grabbed 292 catches and made 41 stumpings.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan cricket squad travelled for Qatar on Wednesday, October 6, and will thereafter go to the UAE to compete in the big tournament. Afghanistan will face their first encounter vs a qualifier at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, October 25.

They recently picked Mohammad Nabi as their captain for the T20 event, which is set to begin on October 17. The first game will be played between Papua New Guinea and Oman at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Al Amerat.
