Consequently, It is now official. Lucknow and Ahmedabad are the 2 additional IPL franchises that will compete in the tournament’s 2022 season. Whereas the RPSG Group got the Lucknow franchise for a staggering INR 7090 crores, CVC Capital Partners won the Ahmedabad franchise for INR 5625 crores. Here is what Sanjog Gupta speaks about the expansion of IPL teams
And so now, Freddie Wilde, co-author of the book Cricket 2.0, has posted about what Star Sports CEO Sanjog Gupta feels about the IPL’s progress. Wilde tweeted a passage from his book.
Sanjog Gupta speaks about the expansion of IPL teams
Gupta had previously stated that the IPL should be expanded to ten teams. Gupta went on to say that the IPL’s expansion is excellent for Indian cricket.
“I think two new IPL teams for sure. There cannot be a better time for the IPL to expand for the good of Indian cricket, for maximizing value, and for fans. It is absolutely the right time for the IPL to expand,” Gupta had stated about the expansion of the tournament.
Sanjog Gupta further stated that the IPL might feature 12 teams competing over a 10-year span, with the competition lasting three and a half months.
“Over a ten-year period, maybe 12 teams. With 10 teams, it should expand by at least two and half weeks. With 12 teams potentially a month extra or maybe more than a month. A two-month tournament becomes a three, three, and half month tournament,” Gupta had revealed.
Gupta further mentioned that the IPL may follow the lead of Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association by holding regular season fixtures. A Women’s IPL will indeed be introduced in the 2020s, according to the tweet.
“Preseason or All-Star games could definitely be looked at as showpiece events abroad to grow the popularity of IPL. This would follow on from leagues like Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and National Football League”.
“As the popularity of women’s cricket grows, IPL franchises are becoming more supportive of the idea of a women’s IPL, which is likely to launch at some point in the early 2020s,” read the tweet.
The cost of the teams clearly underlines that expansion of the IPL from eight teams to ten is the start rather than the end of the growth of the league.
