The BCCI has brought back the ‘uncapped player’ rule for the upcoming IPL 2025, a rule that was last used before IPL 2021. Let’s look at who can play as uncapped players in IPL 2025.

With teams can now retain up to six players before the mega auction this year, franchises will benefit from the uncapped player rule.

Each franchise can retain a maximum of 2 uncapped players. Under this rule, an Indian player who has not played any international match in the previous five years or does not hold any central contract with BCCI, can be retained as uncapped for INR 4 crore.

The rumors surrounding this rule were circulating right after the conclusion of IPL 2024, mainly due to MS Dhoni. And now that the rule has been reinstated, we look at 3 big players who can play as uncapped players in IPL 2025.

MS Dhoni

The man who needs no introduction in cricket. If MS Dhoni’s name comes into the auction list, then one cannot imagine europhia it will create inside the auction room to attain his services and double the excitement of fans. And why not, he is undoubtedly one of the most successful captains in cricket history and in IPL as well, having led Chennai to record five IPL and 2 CLT titles. While his record with bat and as a wicketkeeper is also outstanding.

However, Dhoni will not go anywhere, if he makes a decision to play one or more seasons, he will play as a Chennai Super Kings player. But, as even MS Dhoni is not sure about his involvement in the league, the option to retain him as an uncapped player for IPL 2025 will benefit the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

Mohit Sharma

The backbone of team Gujarat Titans specially in the 2023 season, Mohit Sharma, who last played for India in 2015 can be retained as an uncapped player by Gujarat Titans.

Mohit took 27 wickets to end his IPL 2023 as the joint-highest wicket taker and played a big role in guiding GT to the finals. Despite leaking much runs in 2024, he managed to take 13 wickets in 12 games in IPL 2024. His slower deliveries during the death overs are vital and holds the ability to change the course of the game.

As players with Mohit’s caliber are difficult to find, the option to keep him in the squad for INR 4 crore can turn out to be good choice.

Sandeep Sharma

The right-arm swing bowler, Sandeep has remained an important part of team Rajasthan Royals during the last two seasons, grabbing 23 wickets at an economy around 8.3.

Interestingly 16 out of 23 wickets came during the death overs. His skillset with the new ball and his death over heroics in last two seasons is enough to get him at least 4 crores, if Rajasthan opts to retain Sandeep as an uncapped player.

Sandeep Sharma last played for India way back in 2015 and is qualified to be picked as an uncapped.
