The Indian Premier League (IPL) has presented a major policy shift for the last portion of the 2025 season, permitting franchises to recruit stand-in replacement players. With the IPL resuming on May 17 and the final on June 3, the new schedule has caused fixture clashes, with some overseas players withdrawing. Particularly, Jake Fraser-McGurk (DC) and Jamie Overton (CSK) have withdrawn from the rest of the season.
IPL Revises Player Rules Amid Fixture Crisis
Under normal regulations, teams can only sign replacements in cases of illness or injury before their 12th game. However, the IPL has relaxed these rules due to the current exceptional circumstances. Franchises are now permitted to hire temporary players to fill vacancies caused by player withdrawals for any reason, such as national commitments, injuries, or personal matters, throughout the entire tournament.
But an important provision has been added: any replacement players inked while the league was suspended will not be available for retention prior to the 2026 season. They have to rejoin the player pool via the IPL Player Auction 2026. The IPL explained that the restriction is put in place so that teams cannot utilize late replacements as an escape clause to avoid the usual auction route and retain players outside of normal bidding.
The IPL notified this development in an official memo to franchises, adding that the policy change follows re-evaluating the existing replacement rules. The league underscored the need to preserve competitive balance and fairness while recruiting players.
This policy revision is a tactical move to the unusual interruption in the IPL calendar, seeking to negotiate franchise maneuverability with the integrity of the player auction mechanism.
