Top Salaried Players in IPL
The IPL 2023 mini-auction was an exciting affair. There were many more millionaires added to the club. It is often the mini auctions that lead to players fetching a huge price as compared to the mega auction. Let us look here for details into Top Salaried Players in IPL.
The salary purses vary from team to team in such mini auctions as compared to the level playing field in the mega one. There is a shift in the power center of player salaries owing to this auction. The often celebrated players are no longer among the top 4 salaried players in the league.
We look at the top salaried players in the IPL currently:
#4 Ben Stokes – INR 16.25 crores
There has hardly been an IPL auction wherein Ben Stokes hasn’t dominated the conversation. He was the highest-paid in consecutive auctions in 2017 and 2018. Ben Stokes represented the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. He went on to play for the Rajasthan Royals from 2018-21. Stokes chose to skip the mega auction last year. He was back in the reckoning this season.
Stokes’ timing was pitch-perfect:
The fact that Stokes was the player of the finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 helped his case a lot. He has also been instrumental in turning around the fortunes of the English Test team. There were 5 teams who bid for Stokes in the auction. It was the Chennai Super Kings who managed to buy him eventually for a whopping INR 16.25 crores. He is currently the fourth highest-paid player in the league.
#3 KL Rahul – INR 17.00 crores
His international appearances haven’t been up to the mark in recent times. KL Rahul has had an underwhelming 2022. But it has had little effect on his IPL credentials. KL Rahul led LSG made it to the playoffs in their very first year. The Lucknow franchise picked KL Rahul from the players’ draft for a whopping INR 17 crores.
He became the joint highest-paid player ever in IPL history equalling Virat Kohli’s record of INR 17 crores (2018-21). Rahul though was the sole member of the club last year.
#2 Cameroon Green – INR 17.50 crores
Arguably for the first time in IPL history that an IPL novice generated so much buzz. Cameroon Green was touted for superstardom the moment he donned the baggy green. His explosive showing in the T20I series against India grabbed plenty of eyeballs. There was little doubt that Green will fetch a magical number for a first-timer.
Breaking the INR 17 crores barrier:
Teams like Delhi and Hyderabad tried going the distance. But it was Mumbai who managed to outbid them all. They shelled out INR 17.50 crores for Cameroon Green. It makes him the second-highest salaried player, not just this season but in the league’s history itself.
#1 Sam Curran – INR 18.50 crores
His player-of-the-tournament exploits in the 2022 T20 World Cup ensured he will be going for big money in the mini-auction. Sam Curran has been a proven performer in the IPL before. He played his part to perfection in both the teams he represented so far. Hence he was tipped to be the most expensive player in the auction.
But nobody really thought that Curran will break the record for being the most expensive player ever. He thereby broke the record of crossing the INR 18 crores mark. Curran’s salary of INR 18.50 crores is the highest salary purse ever for an IPL cricketer.
