IPL 2022: Matthew Wade reprimanded for offensive behaviour after dismissal against RCB

Gujarat Titans‘ wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade has been reprimanded by the match referee for his outburst after being dismissed.

In the second ball of the fifth over, Wade was given lbw when he tried to sweep against Glenn Maxwell, and he immediately took the review as he was confident that he edged the ball before ball hits the pad. The Replay though suggested that there might have been a deflection when the ball passed the bat. Even the commentators, Greame Smith, Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden were all convinced that the veteran had hit the ball.

However, the third umpire didn’t convinced with the lack of evidence when he checked it on ultra-edge technology, and he was given out. Wade looked flabbergasted that the technology didn’t back him up. He walked off shaking his head. Upon reaching the dressing room, he threw his helmet away and was seen smashing the bat multiple time.

He admitted his offensive behaviour later and was let off with a reprimand. As per the official statement from the IPL Media Advisory, the behaviour of Wade was a Level 1 offence, under Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct.

The captain of GT, Hardik Pandya while expressing his views on the same topic during the post-match press conference has said, “I think it was a slight… on Ultra Edge it was there, right? I don’t know from the big screen it was not (clearly) visible. You can’t fault (anyone). If the technology is not helping, I don’t know who’s going to help. Obviously it is nothing personal from anybody. Most of the time it works and most of the time the right decision is taken.”

Wade was looking in good touch and was playing at 16 runs of 12 balls when he was out dramatically.

Although, the already qualified Gujarat Titans made a set target of 169 for RCB, which they chased in 18.4 overs, courtesy of excellent batting performances by Virat Kohli (73 off 54) from the beginning and Glenn Maxwell (40* off 18) in the end.
