Dhoni back as CSK captain for rest of IPL 2025 Season

In a twist that no CSK fan saw coming, Chennai Super Kings’ campaign in IPL 2025 has taken a dramatic turn. Young skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the tournament with a fractured elbow, forcing the Yellow Army to turn to their trusted talisman — Mahendra Singh Dhoni. So Let’s take a look at Dhoni back as CSK captain for rest of IPL 2025 Season.

Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news on Thursday.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out the IPL due to a fracture on his elbow. We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as the captain in the remaining games.” said Fleming while talking to reporters.

Gaikwad sustained the injury after being struck by a vicious short ball from Jofra Archer. With his absence leaving a gaping hole in both leadership and batting, who better to step in than the man who built the CSK dynasty?

MS Dhoni, the captain who defined an era, will resume leadership duties from Friday in a high-stakes clash against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai.

The Dhoni legacy needs no introduction. From being the most expensive player in IPL’s inaugural season in 2008 to being ready to play as an uncapped player in 2025, MSD’s journey is nothing short of legendary.

He’s led CSK to five IPL titles, including back-to-back triumphs in 2010 and 2011 — a feat no other captain has achieved. Despite batting lower down the order, Dhoni has amassed 5,346 runs in 269 matches, becoming the only wicketkeeper-batter to cross the 5000-run milestone in IPL history — and CSK’s highest run-getter to date.

The roar of the Chennai crowd, the iconic helicopter shot, and the ice-cold presence behind the stumps — all set to return in full force.

While Dhoni had stepped away from captaincy in 2022, he took back captaincy in between the 2022 season itself after the things did not go well as expected and then led CSK to their record fifth IPL title in 2023.

Dhoni once again handed the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024, fate had other plans. CSK finished 5th last season and now find themselves at 9th place in IPL 2025, with just one win in five games.

But now, with Captain Cool back at the helm, CSK fans believe the script could flip.
