Challenges for CSK and MI in IPL 2025
CSK and MI, the heavyweights of Indian Premier League, have had a poor and underwhelming IPL 2025 so far. They have been lacking strong performances from their squad, leaving the teams at the bottom half of the points table. Let’s take a look at the challenges for CSK and MI in IPL 2025.
Where is MI going wrong?
Well, for the first 4 matches, MI had been missing their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, as he was injured during the BGT series 2024-25. Apart from him being sidelined, what MI lacks is strong batters. Their last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru was a classic rivalry match, where RCB won at the Wankhede Stadium after 10 years. This feat showcased how MI have lost their batting strength.
MI’s batting squad which features Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickleton, Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya, haven’t been consistent since the start of the tournament. Although Suryakumar Yadav is in the third spot in the orange cap race, his performances haven’t had a significant impact on MI results.
With names like Rohit Sharma, not performing consistently in the game they once mastered, things need to change in the batting order. MI will hopefully take a decision on how to solve their batting strides as early as possible.
Transition Issues with CSK
Chennai Super Kings have struggled with run chases in IPL 2025, winning only their season opener against Mumbai Indians, where they batted first. In the other four matches, they failed to chase targets. CSK’s batting issues lie in an unbalanced top and middle order, with inconsistent performances from Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
This imbalance roots back to MS Dhoni and his ways of making sure CSK’s responsibilities are handled well by the team, once CSK has transitioned away from MS’s style of play. Although this change will need time to impact, CSK will need to strike a balance in their batting squad or they will end their season at a low-point.
