Pakistan World Cup 2023 semifinals scenario

Today’s encounter between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was critical not only for the two competing teams, but also for two other teams whose semi-final prospects hinged on the outcome of this game.

New Zealand, who were sharing the 8 points with Pakistan and Afghanistan before today’s game, stormed ahead of their opponents after defeating Sri Lanka by five wickets in match 41 of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Bengaluru.

With this victory, New Zealand has practically clinched its position in the World Cup 2023 and will face top-ranked India in the semi-final 1 on Wednesday, November 15 in Mumbai.

However, there are still some hopes left for the remaining two sides, as mathematically it is possible that they can qualify for the semis.

Sri Lanka’s loss that too with 25 overs to spare against New Zealand has posted a big dent in Pakistan’s semifinal hopes, but the Babar Azam-led Pakistan still having an outside side to catch the fourth berth to the semis.

Pakistan’s net run-rate currently is 0.36, while New Zealand’s run-rate is 0.74, and Pakistan need to defeat England by a margin of 287 runs after posting 300 on board, if they manage to put 400, in that case they must bowled England out on 112 or chase down the target with 284 balls to spare in order to overcome Kiwis run rate.
