New Zealand Best Playing 11 For World Cup 2023
The black caps always punch above their weight when it comes to a World Cup. New Zealand has made it to the semifinals of every ODI World Cup since 1999 barring just the 2003 edition. Especially in the last two World Cups, New Zealand has come the closest. They lost a one-sided final to Australia in the 2015 World Cup. But their final against England in 2019 was one for the ages. As Ian Smith had described, they lost the final by the barest of margins.
New Zealand’s preparation heading into the World Cup 2023:
The New Zealand team walks into this World Cup just like in every other edition. Their preparations coming into the World Cup have been low-key. They haven’t done anything fancy so far. New Zealand though has had its fair share of injury concerns. Their ODI captain, Kane Williamson, appeared a doubtful starter a few months ago. Williamson has recovered well and is set to lead the side in this edition too.
Doug Bracewell’s injury though is a big blow for New Zealand as a spinning allrounder in Indian conditions is a blessing. Tim Southee too looks uncertain for at least the initial part of the tournament. New Zealand once again has to conjure up their best to compete against big sides in the competition.

We look at New Zealand’s best possible playing XI for the World Cup 2023:
Top order: (1-3)
Devon Conway has established himself as one of the most reliable openers across formats. His experience in the IPL will come in handy. Conway is one of those rare overseas players who has a solid game against spin. New Zealand has picked Will Young over Finn Allen as Conway’s opening partner. They could also look at Tom Latham as an opening option. If Latham moves to the top it will open up another allrounder spot in the middle order. Kane Williamson will continue to be the fulcrum of the batting unit coming in at number 3.
Middle order: (4-7)
They might not have superstar names in their middle order but it remains one of the strongest areas for New Zealand. Latham has had fantastic numbers batting at number 4. Daryl Mitchell has come of age in the last couple of years. He is a fantastic option for the Kiwis at number 5. Mitchell is an effortless ball striker. His finishing abilities will play a central role in New Zealand’s progress.
Glenn Philipps brings in a lot of enterprise coming in at number 6. New Zealand has two options for the number 7 spot. They could look to fit in another seaming bowling allrounder or go for a spinning allrounder. Based on the conditions, they could choose between Jimmy Neesham and Rachin Ravindra.
Bowlers: (8-11)
Mitchell Santner is a sure starter considering his skills and experience. He can make valuable contributions with the bat coming in at number 8. If the conditions aid spin then New Zealand can turn to Ish Sodhi. He is someone who can hit the ball long and hard. Trent Boult will lead the pace attack. Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry can provide assistance to the seam department. The trio proved to be the undoing of India in the last World Cup. Teams will be wary of what they bring to the table.
New Zealand’s predicted XI:
- Devon Conway
- Will Young
- Kane Williamson (C)
- Tom Latham (wk)
- Daryl Mitchell
- Glenn Phillips
- Rachin Ravindra/Jimmy Neesham
- Mitchell Santner
- Ish Sodhi/Matt Henry
- Trent Boult
- Lockie Ferguson
