#5 The Chepauk, Chennai – 50,000
It is one of the most historic Test venues in India. The M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai is fondly called the ‘Chepauk’. East Coast Constructions and Industries constructed the stadium in 1916. It was called the Madras Cricket Club then. Similar to the Boxing Day Test in MCG, Chennai hosted the Pongal Test until the 80s and 90s. The stadium has witnessed many famous games including the India-Pakistan Test of 1998. It underwent a facelift ahead of the 2011 ODI World Cup. The ground now has a capacity size of 50,000.
#4 RGIC, Hyderabad – 55,000
The LB Stadium in Hyderabad was formerly the cricketing venue in the city. It was in 2003 that the new cricketing stadium came up in Hyderabad. India-South Africa ODI was the first game that was played in the city. The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket stadium has hosted many epic encounters. Most of the international games have been high scoring at this venue. India-New Zealand recently played out a thriller that saw over 685 runs being scored. The ground is home to 55,000 people.
#3 Naya Raipur International Cricket Stadium, Raipur – 65,000
It is one of the largest cricketing facilities in India. Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur is referred to as the Naya Raipur International Cricket Stadium. The stadium boasts a seating capacity of 65,000. It has played host to a couple of IPL games. The ground recently hosted the India-New Zealand ODI that saw India topple the Kiwis. It surely deserves more international cricket to be played here.
#2 Eden Gardens, Kolkata – 68,000
It is one of the oldest cricket stadiums in the country. The stadium was constructed in 1864 but has kept pace with changes accordingly. Needless to say, the venue has hosted many landmark games. The 1987 World Cup final was played at Eden Gardens. India and Sri Lanka locked horns in the 1996 World Cup semifinal.
The stadium saw West Indies clinch a thriller in the 2016 T20 World Cup final. Eden Gardens had a capacity of 100,000 before it underwent renovation. The stadium now has a capacity of 68,000. It still remains the second-largest cricket stadium in the country.
#1 The Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad – 110,000
It is undoubtedly the biggest cricketing theatre in the world currently. Formerly called the Motera-the Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad has always been India’s fortress. India defeated Australia in the 2011 World Cup quarterfinal at this venue. The stadium though underwent a complete overhaul in 2015 with a vision to build the world’s biggest cricketing stadium.
The venue was named the Narendra Modi Stadium on the day of its inauguration. It is slated to host the World Cup final in 2023.
