It is the big game. India will take on Pakistan in match number 12 of the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both sides are unbeaten so far with two wins from two games. India faced a tough test against Australia in the opening game but had it quite easy against Afghanistan.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has had two games against teams ranked below them. They registered the highest successful run-chase in World Cup history in the game against Sri Lanka. Both the teams are in high spirits. It sets up this game beautifully.

The World Cup legacy-from where it all began:
India didn’t have the greatest World Cup in 1992. Their only moment of glory came in the game against Pakistan. India managed to defeat the eventual champions in the league stage. Sachin Tendulkar was named the POTM for his all-round brilliance.
The epic quarterfinal and the backdrop of war:
India defeated Pakistan in an electrifying quarterfinal at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Ajay Jadeja took down the finest white ball bowler of the generation, Waqar Younis to help India post a huge score. Venkatesh Prasad then got the better of Aamir Sohail in a heated duel to set up the win.
The 1999 Super Six game between the two sides was played amidst the backdrop of the Kargil War. India managed to get the better of Pakistan once again. Venkatesh Prasad again played a central part as his 5-wicket haul dismantled Pakistan.
A Tendulkar classic and a destined win:
Sachin Tendulkar scored a total of 100 international centuries including 49 in ODIs. But his 98 against Pakistan in Centurion at the 2003 World Cup remains special. He singlehandedly ensured an Indian win deflating an attack comprising Wasim Akram, Waqar, and Shoaib Akhtar. Tendulkar was at it again in the 2011 World Cup when his scratchy 85 took India to a par score. The bowlers then combined to book India a spot in the finals.
The new generation takes over:
Virat Kohli took over the mantle in the 2015 World Cup. He scored a top hundred as India defeated Pakistan in their opening encounter. It was Rohit Sharma’s turn in the 2019 World Cup as he hit 140 to steamroll Pakistan. India established a 7-0 World Cup record against Pakistan.

Can they make it 8-0 or will Pakistan affect a reverse?
Pakistan was touted as outright favourites for the Asia Cup a couple of months ago. India didn’t even know their first-choice playing XI then. But the Indian team has made everyone sit up and take notice of their gameplay in the last month or so. They outplayed Pakistan in the Asia Cup in the Super 4s and eventually went on to win the tournament.
After a disappointing Asia Cup, Pakistan started the World Cup on a strong note. There is very little to choose between the two sides heading into this game. The winner of this game will believe that they have one step in the semi-finals. Hosts India start slight favourites for this game.
