India was successful in defending a target of 357 as they defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs to make 7 wins in a row in this World Cup 2023. India is now the first official team to qualify for the Semi-finals and Sri Lanka’s hope of a Semi-final place is shattered.
Earlier on in the innings India lost their skipper Rohit Sharma in every second ball of the first over to a beautiful delivery of Dilshan Madushanka. India was one wicket down in the very first over.
India cracked open the Sri Lankan batting order: A Similar repeat of Asia Cup 2023 Final
Wow, it was amazing to watch the opening spell of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. It all started with the wicket of Pathum Nissanka, and it was none other than Jasprit Bumrah to provided the much-needed early breakthrough.
Then in the second over it was Md Siraj who pulled out not one but two wickets to crack open the Sri Lankan batting order. Dimuth Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama both had no answers to Siraj’s balls as he completely outsmarted them with his brilliant bowling.
Sri Lanka were 7/4 at the end of fourth over. It was starting to look like an Asia Cup 2024 final where they failed to face Indian bowlers back then. Now it was a similar start for Indian bowlers as they made the lives of Sri Lankan players difficult with those early wickets.
Mohammed Shami yet again displayed his Skills at Wankhede
We can say that it was the downfall of Titanic as Shami once again proved his worth by picking up two wickets in his very first over and making a huge statement. Sri Lanka were down to 14/6 at the end of the 10 overs. It was a day for Indian bowlers yet again here in Mumbai, even though India had a huge total to defend Indian bowlers did a great job in cracking the Sri Lankan batting order.
Shami finished off his spell with a wonder 5 wicket and gave away just 18 runs in 5 overs. Md Shami’s presence in the Indian team has certainly proved to be game-changing as he is contributing bug time in this World Cup season.
Sri Lanka tried hanging in but failed
Maheesh Theekshana and Kasun Rajitha tried to score but they couldn’t handle the pressure of Indian bowlers as Shami went on to pick five wickets. Shami finished his spell 5/18 in five overs. While Ravindra Jadeja picked up one wicket. Shami now holds the record of highest ODI Wicket taker for India in ODI World Cup.
Early On in the Innings
But the King of the Indian team Virat Kohli and the Prince of the Indian team Shubman Gill carried the innings on their shoulders. He went on to play some beautiful strokes as both scored their half-centuries. Virat was 12 runs away from equaling Sachin’s record, while Gill was 8 runs away from scoring his century as both of them were dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka.
Both Virat and Gill together scored 189 runs before Dilshan Madushanka got the breakthrough. But then Shreyas Iyer carried the innings forward. He also scored 82 runs of 56 balls helping India in a big way.
Iyer’s stroke play helped India build a big total, where Ravindra Jadeja also added his finishing touches. Which led India to post a massive total of 357/8 in 50 overs.
Dilshan Madushanka’s Magnificent Bowling Performance in the Big Game
Dilshan Madushanka was the only bowler who asked question to the Indian batsman, and he went on to pick up five wickets at the end of the innings. He finished his amazing spell with five wickets and was quite expensive as well, he gave away 80 runs in his 10 overs.
Chameera was the only other bowler who picked up a wicket, other than this it was an Indian batting display where they outclassed Sri Lankan bowlers.
Sri Lanka Out: India Qualified
Now India has comfortably qualified for the semi-finals with 14 points on board. While Sri Lanka is Knocked out as it is now impossible for them to reach the Semifinals. India continues their winning streak as they make it 7 wins in this World Cup 2023.
