We look at men’s cricketing teams with the most number of ICC final appearances:

#5 Sri Lanka – 7

The Lankan lions as they are fondly called are one of the two Asian sides on this list. Sri Lanka went through a phase between 2007-12 wherein they would reach the final of almost every ICC event but would fail to go the distance. They won their World Cup final in 1996 while losing the other two finals (2007 and 2011). Sri Lanka was the runner-up of the T20 World Cup in 2009 and 2012 while they emerged champions in 2014. Sri Lanka was the joint winner of the Champions Trophy in 2002. Their 7 ICC finals appearance gives them the fifth spot.

#4 West Indies – 8

They had a head start compared to other teams. West Indies won the first two ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979. They were the runners-up in the 1983 edition. Windies though have never made it to an ODI World Cup final since. They tasted success in the Champions Trophy though with a runners-up finish in 1998 and 2006 to go with the winners tag in 2004. Windies won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and competed an encore in 2016. Their 5 title wins from 8 final appearances is a standout!

#3 England – 9

England had to wait for 35 years before they laid their hands on an ICC title. They had the forgettable record of losing 3 ODI World Cup finals in the first 5 World Cups. England had their moment of glory in 2019 when they won the ODI World Cup for the very first time. It was their first win in 4 appearances.

England’s luck in the Champions Trophy has been dismal too with 0 wins out of 2 appearances. They have fared well in the T20 World Cups with 2 titles in 3 final appearances. England’s win percentage in ICC finals is a mere 33.33% as they have won just 3 out of 9 finals.

#2 India – 11

The Indian team hasn’t had a good run in ICC tournament knockouts lately. They have been the most consistent team but have very little to show in recent history. India won their very first ODI World Cup final that they played in 1983. They lost in 2003 but won the title in 2011. India had a chequered record in the Champions trophy too with 4 final appearances resulting in 2 title wins.

The side won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 but lost out in the 2014 T20 World Cup final. They are yet to get off the mark in WTC where they have lost the finals in both editions. India is a close second with 11 ICC final appearances.

#1 Australia – 12

The 2023 WTC champions became the first team to complete the ICC Trophy cabinet haul. Australia lost the first-ever ODI World Cup final in 1975 to the West Indies. They won their ODI World Cup in 1987. Australia finished as runners-up in the 1996 edition too. But since then they have played 4 ODI World Cup finals and have won all of them.

Australia won both the Champions Trophy finals they played in 2006 and 2009. They lost out on the T20 World Cup final in 2010 but eventually won it in 2021. Australia won the WTC 2023 appearing in their 12th ICC final and winning 9 of them!
