The former captain of Australia, Steve Smith Joins Sussex, He has agreed to play three games for Sussex in May as part of his training for the World Test Championship final and the Ashes this summer. Prior to the 2023 Ashes series, which begins at Edgbaston on June 16, and the World Test Championship final, which is slated for early June.

The 33-year-old will play against Worcestershire, Leicestershire, and Glamorgan in May.

Smith is currently the world’s No. 2 ranked Test batter and now he will play for Sussex with No. 22-ranked Cheteshwar Pujara of India. It will be good practice for both players before the World Test Championship in Lords, England.

The development was doing the rounds since the last week or so and came to fruition after Sussex County Cricket Club on Thursday (January 19) confirmed the signing of one of the best batters of the current generation.

Steve Smith adds more Stability to the Sussex team at least for the first three games

The seasoned player Steve Smith has played in 92 Test matches for Australia in his career until now and scoring 30 hundred and 37 half-centuries for a mind-boggling average of 60.89. These are just his Test match stats which make him one of the best test batsmen in the world. 

Sussex now gets one more experienced player who can provide some stability for the Sussex team for at least three matches. He also brings a winning mentality into the team which the team lacked last time around.

Steve Smith’s Comments 

After the announcement of Steve Smith Joining Sussex, he sent out a message saying, “I am excited about joining Sussex for a few games in May and hopefully making a contribution to a successful season. I am particularly looking forward to working with the younger players in the squad and hoping I can provide some guidance to them.”

Sussex CEO Comments

Sussex Cricket Chief Executive Rob Andrew also expressed his feelings after the announcement, by saying “We are thrilled to have Steve Smith available for our County Championship matches in May. To have arguably the world’s best batter play for Sussex just before an eagerly awaited Ashes Test series is great for us and the County Championship.”

“Our Championship form has not been good enough for a number of years, and under the new direction of Head Coach Paul Farbrace, we are looking to be positive and ambitious.”

He concluded by saying “Being able to attract a player of Steve Smith’s caliber is a massive statement and will be of great benefit to our young homegrown players. Particularly our crop of talented young batters.” (Source – Fox Sports )
