Australia Best Playing 11 For World Cup 2023
The five-time World Cup champions enter this tournament as one of the favourites. Australia has made it to the ODI World Cup semifinals 9 times. They are the only team to have won a hat trick of World Cups (1999-2003-2007). Only the West Indies has managed to win the tournament twice in succession (1975-1979).
Australia won the 2015 World Cup playing at home after a disappointing quarterfinal exit in the 2011 World Cup. They are gunning for an unprecedented sixth World Cup title.
We look at Australia’s form ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup:
Australia started the World Cup year with a brilliant ODI series win over India in India. They came back from being 0-1 down to win the 3-match series 2-1. Australia’s opening pair of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh almost won them the series singlehandedly. Mitchell Starc was in full flow too blowing India away in the second game. Adam Zampa continued to trouble the Indian batters with his guile and variations. Australia looked unstoppable at that point in time.
The reversals from the South Africa tour:
Australia took an early lead against South Africa winning the first two games of the 5-match series. But they couldn’t keep up with South Africa’s relentless intensity with both bat and the ball. Their bowlers were especially found wanting against Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klassen, and David Miller. South Africa easily breached the 300-run mark against Australia. They eventually won the series 3-2 handing Australia 3 defeats in a row.
The Indian tour so far:
Australia walked into this series without their talismanic seamer, Starc. Glenn Maxwell too didn’t play the first two games. The 3-match series that was supposed to give more answers has ended up opening a lot more questions for the visitors. Against a side that is missing their key stars, Australia’s performance has been way below par.
Their bowlers in particular including someone like a Zampa have looked lacklustre. They have lost the ODI series 0-2 with one game to go. Australia doesn’t look in the perfect shape but experts expect them to turn up for the big event in style!
We look at Australia’s best possible playing XI for the World Cup 2023:
Top order (1-3):
Travis Head’s injury comes as a big blow for the Australian team. The left-hander has the ability to take the game away from the opposition in the first powerplay itself. It will be the pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh who will open in the World Cup. Marsh was the player of the series against India earlier this year. He is one of the most destructive batsmen in world cricket. Steve Smith will take up the batting anchor role, playing at number 3.
Middle order (4-7):
Australia has the luxury of solid all-rounders who could all slot in right from number 4. It will be interesting to see if they opt for a specialist batter in Marnus Labuschagne at 4 or play Cameroon Green. Glenn Maxwell at number 5 is the quintessential game-changer for the side. Marcus Stoinis will fight for a spot with Green for the batting allrounder’s role. Either of them can come in at number 6. Alex Carey will don the gloves and occupy the number 7 slot.
Lower order (8-11):
Pat Cummins, captaining the side is a handy lower-order batter. If Australia chooses to play two specialist spinners in Zampa and Ashton Agar, they can play Agar at number 8/9. Mitchell Starc will continue to be their biggest hope in the World Cup. Zampa will be the first-choice spinner while it will be a shootout between Hazlewood and Agar for the fourth bowler’s spot.
