A strange incident was witnessed in the history of cricket, when an experienced Sri Lankan player had to face time out.

What actually happened was that Mathews had gone on the field with the wrong helmet, and then he went inside and gestured towards the team dugout to bring another helmet, a lot of time took between all this due to which the umpire talked to Mathews, while the Bangladeshi team looked unhappy with this and asked for time out, which was accepted by the umpire as per ICC rules, making Mathews the first player to be called out for time out.

According to the rules, when a batsman is out, the other batsman has to reach the crease within 3 minutes and play the ball, although Mathews came inside the field on time, but could not play the ball due to the wrong helmet and became a victim of time out.

“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,” states the MCC rulebook.

The time is set at two minutes, nevertheless, according to the ODI World Cup 2023 Playing Conditions. “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,” the statement says.

However, as per the playing conditions of the ODI World Cup 2023, the time is fixed at two minutes. A batsman has previously been timed out only six times in any format, all in first-class cricket.
