Reasons Champions Trophy Opening Ceremony Cancelled?
ICC Champions Trophy which is returning after an 8-year-long gap, and starts from 19th February 2025, is set to be hosted by Pakistan. Pakistan is going to host an official ICC Event since 1996, but they’ve met with various complications on the way. Adding to their ongoing issues is the cancellation of the opening ceremony ritual. Let’s dive deep into this, is the Reasons Champions Trophy Opening Ceremony Cancelled.
What’s the Situation?
According to various reports, The captain’s meet and the opening ceremony for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been cancelled due to the delayed arrival of several teams for the tournament. England and Australia, who are expected later than planned, will arrive in Lahore on February 18 and 19, respectively, just as the tournament begins.
Team India who is set to play their matches in Dubai, their captain, Rohit Sharma, is also unlikely to attend due to security concerns. All these issues have led to the cancellation of the usual pre-tournament photo sessions and press conferences, which are traditionally held ahead of ICC events.
Warm-up sessions Ignored
According to multiple reports England and Australia have chosen to skip their warm-up matches for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a decision which reflects the recent trends in the ICC events. Both England and India after completing their tour of India on February 12, will take a week’s break before heading for the tournament, leaving no time for practice games.
Meanwhile, Australia who will be concluding their Sri Lanka tour on February 14, has opted for a four-day rest before heading over to Pakistan, missing their scheduled warm-up matches on Pakistan’s turf. Both teams cited tight schedules and the need for player workload management as reasons for their decisions.
Although the information regarding the cancellation of the Opening ceremony of the Champions Trophy is not official, the packed schedules of both teams made it impractical. However, the PCB plans to go along with a special event ahead of the Pakistan vs. New Zealand match on February 19 to celebrate the country’s cricketing heritage.
