Yuvraj Singh Suggests Rishabh Pant As India’s Future Test Captain

Former Indian star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has advised the selectors to promote Rishabh Pant as a prospective future skipper. Pant is the ideal man, according to Yuvraj, to lead the Indian Test squad, citing MS Dhoni as an inspiration. Rohit Sharma was appointed India’s all-format skipper following Virat Kohli stepped down from Test captaincy earlier this year following a 1-2 defeat in South Africa. Rohit’s chances of holding to command in the longest format are minimal at 34. This article talks in detail about suggestions made by Yuvraj Sing on Rishabh Pant As India’s Future Test Captain.

Pant, according to Yuvraj, must be groomed considering he exhibits qualities of leadership as well as being a certainty for a place in the red-ball XI. Pant, according to the 40-year-old, probably needs the focus and effort he deserves. Expecting supernatural events right away, according to the lefty, also isn’t a wise decision.

MS Dhoni, at 26 years old, has been selected as India’s limited-overs skipper when Rahul Dravid opted to step down after the 2007 ODI World Cup disaster. Anil Kumble was announced as Test captain a couple of years after he decided to step down.

I think Pant is the right guy to lead the Test team As India’s Future Test Captain: Yuvraj

“You must get someone ready. Like Mahi became captain out of nowhere but they made him, right! Then he evolved. Keeper is always a good thinker because he always has the best view on the ground”, says Yuvraj.

“You pick a young guy who can be a future captain, give him time, and don’t expect miracles in the first six months or a year. I feel you must believe in the younger guys to get the job done,” Yuvraj added.

Yuvraj Singh dismissed those who challenged Pant’s maturity. He used Virat Kohli as a comparison, adding that he was immature when he was expected to captain the Indian side, while Pant’s performance is growing over time. Pant, he says, is the best option to captain India’s international cricket team ahead.

“I was immature at that age, Virat was immature when he was captain at that age. But he (Pant) is maturing with time, I don’t know how the support staff thinks about it, but I think he is the right guy to lead the Test team”, he added further.

“You already have four Test hundreds already and you can do that. In terms of best wicket-keeper batsman, I see Rishabh could be the future legend”, Yuvi concluded.

Yuvraj mentioned that he frequently refers to Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, who batted at no. 7 in 17 Tests and amassed 17 centuries. In Test cricket, India’s wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has 4 centuries and an avg of above 40. If he hadn’t got out so many times in the 90s, he may well have a couple more.
