Women’s international cricket has returned with Austria hosting Germany:
On Wednesday (12-08-2020), women’s international cricket resumes for the first time after the ICC T20 World Cup final match, which held in Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia seven months ago as Austria and Germany are going to play their first T20I match.
Because of the outbreak of COVID-19, all Women’s T20 international cricket matches had been deferred.
Germany, which is known as the Golden Eagles and placed in 27th position in the ICC Women’s T20I ranking will play against Austria, who placed at the 50th position at the Seebarn Cricket Ground to get more points and move up the rankings.
Previously, the Golden Eagles played a T20I match in February against the team of Oman and made a clean sweep with 4-0.
Since the quadrangular series among Jersey, France, Austria, and Norway a year ago, for the first time, Austria will play cricket.
In 2019, nearly 10,000 girls and women participated in cricket in Germany and the women’s cricket is growing year by year since 2016 by 155 percent.
In an ICC release, Anuradha Doddaballapur, the captain of Germany said “At first, I would like to thank Austria cricket to host us in this difficult current situation. We are very much eager to go to the field again after a long time. In the last few month’s time period, the girls have worked really hard to stay fit and work on their skills. So, I am hopeful we will give our best. We look forward to giving a few thrilling games against team Austria”.
The captain of Austria, Andrea Mae Zepeda said “ After the lockdown, the whole team is very excited, and we are looking forward to a few competitive crickets in Europe. In this competition, a couple of sides couldn’t participate because of travel restrictions, but we are pleased those travel restrictions have been eased between Germany and Austria and now we can play some international cricket this year.”
