What is loyalty in Cricket?
Cricket is known as a gentleman’s game, and it is.
However, there have been situations where sportsmanship and loyalty to the game and the team led to some concerns about the sport.
Mankading is regarded as one of the most heinous outs in cricket history, causing a schism between teams and spectators, while a recent rare occurrence during which Angelo Matthews was sent out without facing any ball as he failed to reach the crease on the time limit raised questions about sportsmanship.
In the midst of all of this, a league’s team decided to remove the player who led them to five titles in ten years from the leadership position.
Why Mumbai Indians removed Rohit Sharma as Captain of MI?
The Mumbai Indians of the Indian Premier League did this to none other than IPL’s most successful captain Rohit Sharma.
And he was replaced by his deputy in all-format of the national team (India), Hardik Pandya.
Rohit took over as captain of the Mumbai Indians in 2013 and led the team to victory in its first year as a leader.
He repeated his winning success in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020. His side reached the playoffs in the last season also.
His abrupt removal from the skipper’s job is incomprehensible to MI fans and some cricket enthusiasts alike. However, if we consider the opposite side of the coin, the decision may make some sense.
Rohit, who will turn 37 in April next year, may retire from cricket in a few years, leaving MI, one of the most successful IPL franchises, without an established leader.
And who better than Hardik Pandya, who began his IPL career under Rohit Sharma, will be given the opportunity to lead the squad while Rohit is still there for some years in the team to guide him?
Pandya is six years younger than Sharma, which could be one of the reasons, as the franchise seeks a larger picture.
This theory is quite acceptable, yet fans are liking the way of Pandya’s selection as captain of MI.
Hardik was a member of the MI team from 2015 to 2022 before moving over to the Gujarat Titans.
The Gujarat Titans put their trust in the young Pandya by naming him captain, and he didn’t disappoint, leading GT to their first-ever title.
GT reached the Indian Premier League finals for the second season in a row under Pandya in 2023 edition.

However, a surprise deal that saw Pandya leave Gujarat Titans and return to Mumbai Indians did not sit well with IPL supporters and soon after that Hardik replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain further agitated fans on social media.

Time will tell if this decision favours the franchise in the league, but fans are not happy, which may change if MI wins the championship in 2024.
