West Indies Legend Sir Everton Weekes Dies Aged 95

Weekes had passed away after a severe illness at his Christ Church home:

Sir Everton Weekes– the West Indies legend, who is known as one of the ‘Three Ws’ worldwide has died at the age of 95.  In early 1948, he played his first series against the team of England. He got the chance to play the final match in Jamaica just because George Headley had an injury. Before he had scored, Weeks was put down and hissed by the local players who thought that he shouldn’t be selected. But he concluded the innings by scoring 141 runs. It was just the beginning of great Weekes.

In his next four Test Innings, he scored 128, 194, 162, and 101 runs against India. The five back to back succession had become a Test record, which proves his mastery.

Once he said that making runs is his habit. So, when you get into that habit, why not enjoy it fully. Once you play long enough, that you will lose that habit.”

On Wednesday night, the official twitter posted a tweet “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of an icon”.

Weekes was always accompanied by Clyde Walcott and Frank Worrell. All three Ws were born in 18 months in the parish of St Michael on the south-west coast of Barbados. According to Walcott, all they were delivered by the same obstetrician.

Walcott also said that they all three played their first Test match in England series but among them, Weekes was the best batsman.

Cricket West Indies has paid a touching tribute to Weekes, saying their hearts are ‘heavy’

In the year 1958, he took his retirement. He played 48 test matches in his career and scored 4,455 runs with an average rate of 58. Among the West Indies batsmen, only Headley has a higher average of 60 runs. Even Garry Sobers had 57 runs average.

Among the 15 hundreds of Weekes, seven centuries came against India. Once he made three centuries continuously in New Zealand. Before his final Test, he made 197 runs on his home ground, Bridgetown’s Kensington Oval against Pakistan.

Richie Benaud, Australia player said that Weekes always ready to hammer the bowlers. He was a ferocious hooker, puller as well as square-cutter, and also an outstanding driver.
