We’re Giving England Too Many Excuses: Michael Vaughan

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has slammed Dominic Sibley and Dan Lawrence after yet another dismal showing with the bat from the two batsmen. Vaughan questioned if the pair is capable of representing cricketing at the world-class level. They’ve been a regular of the English Test team for a long tie and have been successful for run scorers at the county level in recent years. let’s look at why Michael Vaughan slammed England team.

Sibley has been chastised for the speed with which he hits home runs. In first-class cricket, he has a strike rate of 40, while in 20 Tests, he has a strike rate of 35. Although only appearing in 35 innings for England, he has amassed close to 1000 runs at a 30.78 average. He has 2-centuries and 5-fifties to his name, but he has been struggling with the bat recently.

Dan Lawrence, too, has a below-average mark after 13 Test innings, with only 3 fifty-plus scores. However, Vaughan’s remarks came after England’s batting collapsed once more on the first day of the first Test against India. Lawrence opted for a four-ball duck whereas Sibley had 70 balls for his 18.

“Sometimes you have to look at players and ask if they are good enough at this level,” Vaughan told BBC Sport. “Dom Sibley doesn’t offer a great deal – he can’t give you that counterpunch. Dan Lawrence is young and may come back, but while he has that technique, when he first goes out there you hide behind the curtains. You’re not sure what he’s trying to achieve in the first 20 balls. They are two players that look a little bit out of their depth,” Vaughan added.

Vaughan continued by discussing the state of mind of the English hitters. He mentioned that they’ve had numerous recent failures, which are serving as baggage. Vaughan also mentioned the fact that none of the England hitters had played first-class cricket in recent years.

“You can say the England players haven’t been given enough first-class cricket leading up to this, but India didn’t either. We’re giving England too many excuses,” the former batter concluded.
