In an unexpected, Indian off-spinner Washington Sundar screened positive for COVID-19 and is now a questionable player for the forthcoming three-match One-Day International series versus South Africa. The series begins on January 19, and the ODI team was scheduled to depart for Cape Town on Wednesday (January 12). Sundar, on the other hand, is now hesitant to fly since he has tested positive for the deadly virus.
Sundar’s departure from the series might be a big setback for the visitors, who are missing the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel. Sundar was supposed to be the squad’s first-choice all-rounder in their unavailability. Unfortunately, there are many concerns over his participation, and India wouldn’t like to skip out on his abilities.
I will come back to you soon: W Sundar
It should be noticed that Sundar is also out of play for some time owing to injury. Owing to fitness difficulties, he subsequently missed the 2nd leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and the following 2021 T20 World Cup. He just healed and competed for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He performed admirably in the competition, securing him a comeback to the ODI team.
“I have nothing to comment, I will come back to you soon,” the young all-rounder replied when asked about him testing positive for Covid-19.
Unfortunately, it appears that his comeback to national colors will be postponed for a while longer. “He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad,” said BCCI official.
Furthermore, with new white-ball captain Rohit Sharma out with a hamstring problem, KL Rahul will captain India in ODIs. If Sundar is ruled out, Venkatesh Iyer is expected to fill the all-rounder position.
