Shane Warne was given a percentage by the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals at the time of the league’s introductory publication in 2008, a deal that could potentially find the traditional spinner laughing his way to the bank.
As per the ‘Herald Sun’, Warne was paid $657,000 and given possession of 0.75 percent for each year he played after coming out of retirement in 2008.
“Part of my deal (was) because I had retired from international cricket and I came out (of retirement), they asked me to be the captain, coach and run a cricket team the way I wanted to run it; I was the one-stop-shop,” Warne was quoted.
Warne as a coach-cum-mentor
Warne, who was also a coach-cum-mentor and then the Royals’ Brand Ambassador, led an incredible bunch of players back in 2008 to an unexpected victory during IPL’s inaugural edition.
The current Indians star Ravindra Jadeja was a young uncapped player back then, who had been backed by Warne to the hilt.
“We were the underdogs, the least favored we are, no one allowed us to win. It was the franchise cricket IPL’s first-ever year in which owners bought players went to auctions,” added Warner.
Rajasthan Royals franchise is currently worth $200 million, and Warner expects the value will double over the next few years, according to reports.
“Three percent of $400 million is good, ‘Warne said, suggesting he could gain up to $12 million.
