Vaughan: Important That IPL Takes Place Before World Cup
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that a shortened Indian Premier League event leading up to the ICC T20 world cup would be an ideal option in the present situation where the mega tournament’s future this year has been thrown into confusion due to the corona pandemic.
The fast-spreading virus has infected nearly 2000 people throughout India with 50 people succumbing to it. India is presently under 21-day lock-down which will end on April 15th, as a precautionary measure to stop the spreading of the contagious infection.
IPL which should have started already has been planned for mid-April beginning with little chance of it happening with the situation still volatile as the corona cases continue to rise.
Amidst the uncertainty Vaughan proposed an idea, He tweeted, “Here’s a thought. The IPL is played for the 5 weeks leading up to the T20 World Cup in Oz .. all players use it as the great warm up for the WC .. then the WC happens .. So important for the game that the IPL takes place but also the WC.”
It means according to Vaughan the premier league should take place in September before the world cup, which begins on October 18th in Australia.
India Has Busy Schedule In September
But in September India is scheduled to play in Asia Cup in UAE which is hosted by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). After the Asia Cup England will tour India to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20s.
However, a BCCI official on condition of anonymity said, “September is the time when there is monsoon in India. Mumbai will be underwater, there could be steady rain in Chennai. It is a decision that can’t be taken that lightly.”
There is also a suggestion that the T20 world cup should be canceled and IPL should be held instead of it. But ICC and BCCI sources are saying that it’s too premature to discuss the idea now.
