#5 Mohammad Shami:

Mohammad Shami was at the lowest point in his life back in 2017-18. His estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, had charged a case of domestic violence. She also went to the extent of lodging a complaint with charges of attempt to murder. Shami was thereafter charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The serious allegations resulted in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) withholding Shami’s central contract. They later included him in the list as he was cleared from all the charges. Shami has come a long way since then and is now one of India’s finest pace bowlers.

#4 Ravindra Jadeja:

Ravindra Jadeja is not someone who is new to controversy. He is one of the few Indian players who is a repeated offender. In 2010, Jadeja found himself tangled in a boil as he tried to trade teams for a better price. The tournament’s governing council handed him a one-year ban as he didn’t renew his contract with the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Jadeja had a famous barge in with James Anderson in 2014. The incident didn’t sit well with cricket lovers across the globe. His altercation drew flak from all corners.

In 2016, Ravindra Jadeja was reported for running on the center of the wicket repeatedly in the Indore Test against New Zealand. The International Cricket Council (ICC) penalized him 50 percent of his match fees for “causing avoidable damage to the pitch during an international match.”

On-field umpire Bruce Oxenford had noticed that he was running down the middle of the pitch on a repeated basis. The Kiwis, thereafter, were awarded five bonus runs. An ICC release stated that Jadeja had already received two informal and one official warning. He was also meted out with three demerit points.

#3 Ishant Sharma:

Ishant Sharma has had his fair of controversies ever since he made his debut in 2007. In 2014, during India’s Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, Sharma gave Steve Smith a send-off. He was fined 15 percent of his match fees. ICC charged him with Level 1 Article 2.1.4 breach.

Ishant Sharma was banned for 1 Test following a heated altercation with Sri Lankan pacer, Dhammika Prasad. Kohli saw the lighter side of it saying every captain needs a mad bowler.

In 2018, Sharma was again fined 15 percent of his match fees. He was penalized for giving an animated send-off to Dawid Malan after dismissing him.

#2 Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli has been the controversy’s favorite child ever since he made his debut. In January 2018, he was fined 25 percent of his match fees. The incident involved him showing disrespectful behavior towards umpire Michael Gough in a Test match against South Africa at Centurion. Kohli also received a demerit point for the same.

In September 2019, he was handed one demerit point in addition to receiving an official warning for shoulder barging with South Africa fast bowler Beuran Hendricks. ICC charged him with a Level 1 code of conduct breach.

Back in 2012, a young and animated Kohli decided to flash his middle finger at the crowd during a Test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

No other cricketer ever generated such buzz for his off-field duties. Hardik Pandya alongside KL Rahul took part in the show ‘Koffee with Karan’. Pandya received widespread criticism for the comments that he made on the show. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended him temporarily. They also fined him INR 20 lakhs after the incident.

In IPL 2020, the IPL council penalized him. During the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he got into an altercation with Chris Morris.
