He is arguably Pakistan’s best Test batsman of all time. The ever-smiling Younis Khan went about his business in the most unassuming manner. He notched up 6 double centuries for the team in 213 innings across 118 Tests at an average of 52.05.
#9 Javed Miandad – 6
It is a fellow Pakistani at number 9 on this list. Javed Miandad was called the ultimate street fighter. He was someone who was always up for a scrap. Miandad might not have been the most elegant of Pakistani batsmen but he sure was effective. He raked up 6 double centuries in 189 innings across 124 Tests at an average of 52.57.
#8 Virender Sehwag – 6
He is arguably one of the finest Test openers of all time. Sehwag is the rare 21st-century batter to score twin triple centuries. He came close to smashing a third one too. Sehwag was always known to score big Test hundreds. He hit a total of 6 double centuries in 180 innings across 104 Tests that he played.
#7 Marvan Atapattu – 6
He started and ended his career in the most bizarre fashion. Marvan Atapattu could hardly buy a run at the start and at the end of his career. His Test average of 39.02 sums as much. But it was in the interim that Atapattu did the maximum damage. He scored 6 double hundreds in 156 innings across 90 Tests he featured in.
#6 Mahela Jayawardene – 7
The Sri Lankan great smashed 7 double centuries across a career spanning 17 years. Mahela Jayawardene was supremely consistent in both Tests and T20IS. The silken grace of the right-hander was unmatchable. He played a total of 149 Tests (252 innings)with the highest score of 374 comprising 34 Test centuries.
#5 Virat Kohli – 7
He is the only contemporary batter to feature on this list. Kane Williamson is a distant 13 on this list. Virat Kohli took 5 years to score his first double hundred in Tests (2016). But he soon went on to score them at a frenetic pace. Kohli’s dip in form has seen him go without a Test century over the past 3 years. If he finds his mojo back in Tests, Kohli is set to climb a few more spots on this list. He is currently at number 5 with 7 double hundreds in 177 innings across 104 Tests.
#4 Wally Hammond – 7
He is widely regarded as one of the finest to have ever played the game. Wally Hammond is famous for his iconic double hundreds. He has scored a total of 7 double centuries in a 20-year-long career that saw him bat in 140 innings over 85 Tests.
#3 Brian Lara – 9
He was one of the greatest entertainers with a willow in his hand. The Prince of Trinidad was a master of his craft. He holds the record for scoring the highest runs in a Test inning. Lara in fact has 2 scores out of the top 3 in Tests. He scored 9 double-hundreds in 232 innings across 131 Tests at an average of 52.88.
#2 Kumar Sangakkara – 11
He is one of the only two batsmen to score more than 10 double-hundreds in Tests. Kumar Sangakkara is arguably the most elegant left-hander the game has ever seen. He scored 11 double hundreds in 233 innings over 134 Tests at an outstanding average of 57.40.
#1 Don Bradman – 12
There are very few lists in Tests that wouldn’t feature Sir Don Bradman’s name on it. He holds the record for scoring the most Test double hundreds. Bradman smashed 12 double centuries in his two-decade-long career that saw him bat in just 80 innings over 52 Tests. His magical average of 99.40 remains a myth even today!
