Gill began to flourish after being named Player of the Tournament in the U19 World Cup 2018. The same year, he earned his IPL breakthrough for the Kolkata Knight Riders, following which he represented India for the 1st time during the 2019 tour of New Zealand.

Pant started his career in 2017 and has become an important member of the Indian squad, particularly with the retirement of MS Dhoni. Shastri, India’s head coach who served between 2017 to 2021, praised the three for their composure and boldness in their strategy.

It’s just that the exuberance of youth and fearlessness is far greater: Shastri

“They are brilliant! Pant, Shubman Gill, Bumrah – it has only been a couple of years since they made their India debut. They have the same belief as their predecessors; it’s just that the exuberance of youth and fearlessness is far greater. They come in far more experienced than the previous generations,” Shastri.

Shastri, whose term with Team India concluded after the 2021 T20 World Cup, stated that the IPL has significantly altered the sport’s fundamentals. He stated that rubbing shoulders with the elite in the profession has been extremely beneficial to talented youngsters.

“I have always said that the IPL has made a difference – to share a dressing room with the best in the world, play with and against them and then come into the Indian team; [it makes them] far more experienced”.

“When I was playing, the maximum pace I had faced in domestic cricket was 74kmph. Then, [when I made it] to the Indian team, [I faced] Imran Khan and the West Indies pacers. The exposure level is vastly different,” he added.
