During September and October of this year, the New Zealanders will play Pakistan in a limited-overs series. The series will begin on September 17th, 2021, with 3 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 5 Twenty-20 Internationals (T20Is).
Heath Mills, the Chief Executive of the Kiwis Players Association, remarked that knowing about the happenings in Afghanistan is heartbreaking. Mills went on to say that the Kiwi players have voiced concerns about safety and that they need to be convinced of the procedure before a decision can be made.
Reg Dickason, a security expert will look after the safety measures in Pakistan: Heath Mills
“We’re very comfortable with the process we’ve got, but notwithstanding that, with events in Afghanistan in the last few days, it’s very sad what’s happening in that country and people are obviously asking questions of our security check processes. That includes players, which is completely understandable. We just need to assure them of the process, and follow it, and reach a determination,” said Heath Mills.
Reg Dickason, a security expert, will fly to Pakistan and reflect on the circumstances within 5 days, according to Heath Mills. Dickason will suggest whether New Zealand’s visit to Pakistan should just go forward or not, Mills said, adding that if Dickason is concerned about the security procedures in place, New Zealand may not compete with Pakistan.
“That will take him four or five days and then he’ll report back, and recommend whether the tour goes ahead, or it doesn’t for whatever reason… if there are changes to whatever the plan might be. And at any point, if he’s uncomfortable he would communicate that and the team would exit Pakistan,” concluded Mills.
Whereas, frequent New Zealand cricketers such as captain Kane Williamson and bowling attack Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult, and Kyle Jamieson may not be going on tour Pakistan because they will be playing for their respective teams in the 14th edition of the IPL, which will be held in the UAE.
