Somerset’s Jack Brooks Apologizes Pujara Over Racist Nickname

Racism has swept over the cricket world by assault, and there has been no prevention since one incident surfaced. In the most recent development, Somerset pacer Jack Brooks has apologized for using racist comments in 2012. In the same line, he apologized to Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara. Here is why Somerset’s Jack Brooks Apologizes Pujara.

According to sources, Brooks nicknamed Pujara “Steve” during his spell at the Yorkshire club. Two instances came out on the board, prompting more inquiry into Brook’s racism allegation. He also used the term “n***o” to English pacer Tymal Mills as well as Stewart Laudat, both of who played minor county cricket for Oxfordshire.

In the most recent development, Brook made a notice on November 18, Thursday, saying that he truly regrets using the same phrase. “I acknowledge that the language used in two tweets I made in 2012 was unacceptable and I deeply regret using it. I unreservedly apologize for any offense caused to anybody who may have seen these tweets,” said Brooks.

I accept that it was disrespectful and wrong to do so: Brooks

Laudat addressed the issue on Twitter, stating that he has known Brooks for a long period of time and that the batsman has never left him feeling uncomfortable. Brook’s identity was revealed only this week during Azeem Rafiq’s statement before the Department of Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee report. Rafiq pointed out that it was only Brooks who began addressing Pujara as ‘Steve.’ Brooks, on the other hand, has issued an apology in the same case.

“With reference to my naming in Azeem Rafiq’s statement to MPs this week, the use of the name ‘Steve’ related to some people having difficult names to pronounce. When this has occurred in the past in a dressing room environment, it has been commonplace to give nicknames, regardless of creed or race. I admit to having used it in this context and now accept that it was disrespectful and wrong to do so”.

“I have reached out and apologized to Cheteshwar for any offense that I have caused him or his family. At the time I didn’t recognize this as racist behavior, but I can now see that it was not acceptable,” he added.
