Rohit Should Lead India Across Formats With Rahul As His Deputy: Gambhir

Former Team India captain Virat Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain following India’s performance at the 2021 T20 World Cup, and in a sudden change of fortunes, he was also sacked as the ODI captain.

Meanwhile, spectators and analysts were shocked when the legendary batter stepped down as the Test skipper, a format in which his captaincy was widely regarded as the greatest for India. In a similar vein, India is now looking for a Test captain to replace Rohit Sharma, who is already in charge of white-ball responsibilities.

New space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy: Gambhir

Former Indian cricket icon Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts in the very same scenario, saying that Rohit should be handed captaincy across all forms, alongside KL Rahul as his deputy. Considering that India has T20 World Cup this year, this decision would ensure consistency in approach.

“In my book, Rohit Sharma should lead India across formats with Rahul as his deputy. One captain across formats will ensure consistency in style and approach of the Indian team especially considering that we have another T20 World Cup later this year,” said Gambhir.

Gambhir went on to say that India’s edge is in their Test side, but that they still have challenges to work out in their white-ball forms. The former batsman also praised India’s bowling in the most crucial form of the game and urged for a stable middle order in limited-overs competitions.

“Between the last Test and ODI series, the new space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy. I think it is an individual’s call and that is how it should be treated. I think Virat left the Indian Test team in good health but I can’t say the same about white-ball cricket. Our bowling resources in Test matches are a neighbor’s envy and owner’s pride. They have shown time and again that they are the engine room for a team’s performance. In limited-overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order which Virat couldn’t create,” added Gambhir.
