Ashwin has decided to leave IPL 2021 to support family during the testing times.
Ravichandran Ashwin Opts Out of IPL 2021. In a recent interview, Ashwin said – “I am so privileged to be having the badge on. I have heard and wondered what the London counties are all about. Even though it’s only for a game, I am delighted to share this dressing room,”
This game is going to be Ashwin’s 3rd county appearance. His first stint was in the 2017/18 season where he joined Worcestershire. And in the year 2019, he played for Nottinghamshire, where he took six wickets in one of the games against Surrey, the same team which he is going to represent now.
In the group 2 fixtures, Surrey will be facing Somerset from July 11 to 14th and the match will be played at Kennington Oval, London. Rory Burns will be leading the Surrey side and some top players like Hasim Amla and Sean Abbott are a part of the Surrey setup.
Ashwin will now be the 1st Indian cricketer since Murali Karthik to play for Surrey. Earlier Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Anil Kumble, Pragyan Ojha had represented Surrey in the past. Even Virat Kohli was supposed to represent a county team back in 2018 but his stint came to an end due to a neck injury
Ashwin will be leading the Indian bowling attack in the England Series and as per the reports, all the Indian players will reassemble in the 3rd week of July and will play a practice match.
India’s upcoming Tour against England is going to be the first match of the 2nd World Test Championship cycle and both teams will look to start their campaign on a winning note.
