P.V. Sindhu walked into the semi-finals high on confidence. She had quite a clean run in the lead-up to the semi-finals. Sindu was in devastating form both in pre-quarters and the quarters. She brushed aside both the opponents to set up a mouth-watering semifinal clash against Tai Tzu Ying. Ying who belongs from Taipei is ranked 2nd in the world. The two players have faced each other 18 times of which Ying leads with 13 wins to Sindhu’s 5. But it is to be noted that big game luck has deserted Ying. Sindhu on the other hand won the gold at the 2019 world championships. Sindhu is the first Indian to be crowned world champion. She even won Olympic silver in Rio 2016. The 6th rank seeding notwithstanding, this promises to be an epic duel.
The first set:
Ying was on the money right from the word go. She bagged the first two points and stunned Sindhu with a brutal body smash. But Sindhu got on the points board. She didn’t just draw level real quick she went on to take a 3-point lead at 5-2. Sindhu continued to maintain the lead at 11-8. She is chasing her second consecutive Olympic medal and only two players prior to her have done that. At the mid-game interval, it was advantage Sindhu who was looking real good.
But post the interval, the game changed fortunes quickly. Ying brought on her A-game and caught Sindhu off guard. She went on to dominate the second half of the first set and came out trumps. Ying won the first game 21-18.
Sindhu’s run halted:
It was always going to be a tough task for Sindhu to make a comeback in the 2nd set. Ying looked rampaging and didn’t let Sindhu settle in the 2nd set. She took a massive 6 point lead at 14-8 and since then it was curtains for Sindhu. Sindhu was trying hard to stage a comeback but it was well beyond her.
Ying won the second game 21-12. The 2nd ranked player won the match in straight sets. India’s quest for gold/silver in Badminton has come to a halt. Sindhu will now battle for the bronze medal.
