On This Day: Sachin Tendulkar Scored 13th ODI Century In 1998

Sachin Tendulkar 13th ODI Century In Yet Another Winning Effort:

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had recorded his 13th ODI century on this day in 1998 in yet another winning effort as his knock placed India in a comfortable place during the fourth match of the Kanpur Pepsi Triangular Series.

After Australia’s then-captain Steve Waugh won the toss and elected to bowl, the visitors brought Ricky Ponting’s top-scoring 84 (139) onboard 222/9 in 50 overs. India pacer Ajit Agarkar was the choice of their bowlers with bowling figures of 10-0-46-4.

Tendulkar, who opened the batting with Sourav Ganguly (72), stitched a match-winning 175-run opening partnership.

Waugh’s effort to add spinner Gavin Robertson to the sixth over assault saw Tendulkar’s first display of violence, which stepped out on successive deliveries to smash the off-spinner down the track for a six and a four.

Tendulkar Hit Three Fours  To Further Pile On The Agony On The Visitors:

Tendulkar hitting Robertson in his subsequent over for another six saw India cross the 50-run mark. In the resulting Damien Fleming, Tendulkar struck three fours to pile on the agony on the visitors.

Tendulkar powered Australia’s all-rounder Tom Moody to run a few runs on the first delivery of the 14th over and complete a half-century in 39-ball. Tendulkar, then 24, hit Moody in the same over for two sixes as he had given no signs of calming down.

Tendulkar flicked a Fleming delivery to score a century after hitting more sixes off Australian spinners in Darren Lehmann and Shane Warne, in the 28th over. With the support of five fours and seven sixes, Tendulkar, who mistimed a Warne delivery to substitute fielder Damien Martyn in the next round, ended up scoring 100 (89).

Though India lost three more wickets, without much pain they eventually chased the target in 45th over.
