It’s time to meet the 1983 World Cup winners – Team India

India made history on June 25, 1983, when they defied the odds to win the coveted trophy at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Despite the fact that India is currently among the most dominating cricketing nations in the world, the seeds of that domination were planted on this day, 39 years ago, when the Kapil Dev-led Indian side defeated the powerful West Indies to win the coveted Cricket World Cup trophy.

Before the commencement of World Cup 1983, not many predicted India a chance of becoming the 193 World Cup winners, but Kapil Dev and his team shocked everyone by competing all the way to the finals.

India’s victory over the favourites West Indies in the final match at Lord’s Cricket Ground made it much sweeter. India’s bowling lineup put on a valiant performance in the final game of 1983 World Cup as the Kapil Dev-led team India successfully defended a below-par total.

How India beat West Indies in 1983 World Cup final?

While batting first, India only managed to score 183, with Kris Srikanth leading the way with a 38-run knock. Sandeep Patil contributed as well with 27 runs. Although no other batter was able to bat for an extended period of time. Kapil Dev (15) and Sunil Gavaskar (2) were unable to score big runs on the pressures day.

When defending 184, Vivian Richards walked back before reaching his half-century, giving Kapil Dev and his team a huge boost. Richards was removed by Madan Lal, thanks to Kapil Dev’s brilliant running catch. The legend Richards scored 33 runs before he returned to the pavilion.

Even though Jeff Dujon scored 25. West Indies’ innings eventually ended with a score of 140, giving India a comfortable 43-run victory.

Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal each claimed three wickets for India. While Kapil and Roger Binny each took one wicket, Balwinder Sandhu took two.

The pre-tournament favourites were West Indies, England, and Australia. And against all odds, India triumphed, defeating England and the West Indies in the semi-final and final matches, respectively.

Cricket in the nation received a significant boost after this victory, and the sport has never looked back.
