Both teams, after locking horns in Leeds, London and Birmingham, reached Manchester to play the fourth match of the series.

England after winning the toss opted to bat, however, their decision to bat first was turned out be a bit dreary as they lost 2 of their main batters at the score of 23. While Tim Curtis tried to stay at the crease but he couldn’t stayed for long and gout out after scoring 22.

Robin Smith and David Gower then steadied their ship by adding 75 runs for the fourth wicket. When everything was looking in control of England they lost Gower.

Wickets kept on falling from other end, but Smith stands tall and completed his century, he failed to reach 150-mark as he got out on 143, while England score in first innings were 260.

In reply, Australia posted a mammoth total in front of the hosts to grab a 187-run lead. It was a joint efforts of Aussie batters. However, three batters Mark Taylor (85), Allan Border (80) and Steve Waugh (92) after crossing 80 mark failed to convert it into a century.

Then came Australian bowlers, who dominated in the third innings of the game by removing 6 of England’s top batters at just the score of 59, allowing Australia to win the match by an inning.

However, the wicketkeeper Jack Russell and the spin bowler Jon Emburey did a fantastic partnership for the seventh wicket and helped their side cross 200 mark.

Emburey got out after scoring a solid 64, while Russell continued to fight and walked back to pavilion with a not out 128 as England bowled out for 264.

Australia chase down the target of 78 after losing a single wicket to claim yet another victory and the series by 3-0 in 6-match competition.

The visitors were in domination mode in 1989 series as after winning 3 out of 4, they went on to win the fifth test as well, and later secured the series by 4-0 while playing in England.
